HOMEWORK SUPPORT
To remind you of the best ways you can support your child’s reading at home:
Make sure your child is reading at a ‘Just Right’ level, and make sure he or she is filling out the reading log. There are three quick checks you can do with your kids to make sure the book is ‘Just Right’:
1)The ‘Five Finger Rule’ (no more than 5 miscues per page)
2) Finishing 20-25 pages in a 30-minute block of reading
3) Checking for understanding: read the same page, chapter, and/or entire book with your child, asking them to summarize it for you. What they say should match with what you read.
If your child is not meeting all three of these checks, it may be time to reach for another book.
